Bryan's next competition will be a re-ranking meet held at the end of the month at the training center. This meet will re-rank the top gymnasts gym-nasts in the country. Leech said that in spite of the fact that Bryan has been recovering from a stress fracture in his left leg, he has a good chance of being ranked rank-ed in the nation's top three. BRUT HART BOUNTIFUL-Amidst controversy con-troversy and confusion, gymnast Casey Bryan of USA Gymnastics captured second place honors in Junior Ju-nior Pan American competition held earlier this month. Bryan, 14, was edged out of first place by only two-tenths of a point. Scoring, however, was controversial con-troversial according to Bryan's coach Chris Leech. "There was some confusion on (he part of the Canadian and Cuban judges," said Leech. "According to the rules established estab-lished by the U.S., a gymnast competes com-petes in the age group according to his ape at the time of competition. "T he Cubans and the Canadians ruled that Casey had to compete at the age level according to his age as of Dec. 3 1 . They let him compete in the preliminaries in the 12-14 category but forced him into the older age group in the finals. It was a mix-up, but there was nothing we could do about it." Bryan went on to win the silver nicd il in the high bar and a bronze on tiie rings. "We felt that Casey was way underscored on the bars," said I xec h . "After Casey finished, the Cuban coach came up and said that he felt so, too." Bryan received 9.5, 9.6, 8.2 and 8.3 in the event. The U.S. team, coached by Irech, won the gold medal.
