It was a case early of too much height inside for Woods Cross, as Bountiful's Camille Dupaix and Jenny Gardner, along with Amanda Walton, dominated the boards in the first half when the Braves took a 36-21 lead. The game marked the first time in several weeks that both Dupaix and Gardner were able to play together, due to nagging illnesses il-lnesses and injuries. As it was, Gardner was still nursing a sore ankle, but it didn't slow down the talented junior. Bountiful took an 18-7 first quarter lead, then expanded it to 36-21 36-21 at intermission. Most of the early damage was done by Gardner and Dupaix, though point guard Kim Reimann also added to the onslaught on-slaught More importantly, the Braves bottled up Woods Cross center Alisa Smith defensively, holding her to just one first-half basket If anything kept the Wildcats within shouting distance, it was the long-range attack of junior Jo Leong. She canned five three-pointers three-pointers in seven attempts for the game, three during the first half. But the scrappy Wildcats came out with a vengeance in the third quarter, and threatened to make a game of it early. Smith scored inside, in-side, Molly Mason added two free throws, then, after two hoops by Dupaix, Leong canned a trey and Maureen Newland followed her shot for a tip-in that made it 40-30 with 3:50 left. Reimann responded with two quick baskets, but back-to-back scores from Jeness "Indiana Jones cut the lead again to 44-34 with 44 seconds in the third period. Amy Lewis of Bountiful scored on a rebound with 30 seconds left, and the quarter ended with the Braves up 46-34. Bountiful ended the Wildcats' hopes when Gardner and Reimann both scored in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, and after Newland scored to make it 50-36, Dupais tallied inside. Leong hit her fifth three-pointer with 3:03 left to make it 52-39 but the Braves then salted away the victory with seven free throws in the final two minutes. Leong followed her varsity effort by hitting three of four three-pointers three-pointers in the JV game that followed, follow-ed, making her three-point shooting percentage 8 of 11 on the day. In the varsity game, Gardner led aU scorers with 18, while Reimann and Dupaix both added 12. Woods Cross was led by Leong with 17 while Newland and "Indiana" each scored six. |
