The student learn what parents in PTSA do and what they all contribute." And, parents and students alike are impressed with the results of their efforts, a smooth functioning organization that is accomplishing what it was formed to do, improve the educational experiences of the students at Viewmont High. BY JOHN ROBINSON It seems logical that an organization organiza-tion dedicated to helping students would benefit by having students involved in the decision-making of that organization. That's the way the Viewmont High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association is designed. There are seven studentsall seniorswho hold commissioner or vice president positions on the board. The students, Mindy Bland, Shauna Burns, Tricia Hales, Nathan Harrison, Tanja Mclntyre, David McMullin and Brenda Ward, not only attend the monthly meetings but express their concerns, make recommendations and then vote on the various proposals (budget, academic, aca-demic, athletic, social matters, etc.) The result is "that there is a great amount of respect between adults and students and an understanding regarding the various viewpoints," said Karen Smith, who along with her husband Rod, is co-president of the Viewmont PTSA. "It's an excellent learning situation situa-tion for all involved adults as well as the students," Smith adds. The student board members agree. "It's interesting to see how they (adults and students) interact with each other," said Bland. "It's really fun to be involved to the degree I am in the political aspect of education," stated Mclntyre. Mcln-tyre. (Both Mclntyre and Bland serve as student representatives on the Utah State PTA, Mclntyre on the Legislative Action Committee (LAC) and Bland on the Community Communi-ty Involvement Commission (CIQ. This has given an added dimension to their experience.) "That interaction is an education in itself," said McMullin, adding, "that's the interesting part, working together." Speaking of work, Harrison said he's gained a new perspective on the efforts parents put in to make the high school experience a rewarding rewar-ding one for the students. "It's been |
