View-mont. Funny, the joke's on them now. When the lights finally went out at Clearfield High's Falcon Stadium Sta-dium Thursday night, the Vikings were Kings of the Hill. They had gone through the tournament as the only unbeaten team, they had out-scored out-scored their opponents 17-5, and they had beaten, at one time or another, all three of those other schools everyone was banking on to win it all. Thursday's 3-1 victory over Skyline Sky-line was simply the frosting on a cake the Vikes had carefully baked all season long. It started with a sizzling preseason, continued with a league win over Woods Cross (the first Wildcat loss in league in four years), and culminated with a sparkling tournament performance. perform-ance. Even when Skyline scored the first goal in Thursday's match, the Vikes were never seriously in jeopardy of lo sing the school's first official state Soccer title. Shawn Lockwood started things off by setting up an Eagle score, taking a pass just over midfield and dribbling the left sideline before passing to Scott Coulter for the goal. Viewmont never looked back, as Dave Lauder, who earned acclaims all year long and thankfully thankful-ly got the showcase he deserved in front of the state's media in the tournament, answered that score five minutes later. Lauder, who suffered a severely sprained ankle in the Vikes' win over Bountiful Wednesday, could hardly walk Thursday morning. With the help of sports medicine expert Ralph Downs, Lauder played with his left ankle wrapped, and it didn't slow down that powerful left leg. Lauder dribbled to the endline, then rifled a shot into the corner of the net to tie the game. In the second half, the Vikings' scoring leader did it again. After hitting the crossbar with a head shot, Lauder was shoved to the ground. A penalty kick followed, and Lauder's shot in the 17th minute mi-nute into the left corner of the net proved the game-winner. Viewmont got an insurance goal with 10 minutes left, as John Cook crossed beautifully to David PHOTOS BY ROGER TUTTLE Viewmont goalie Travis Godfrey leaps high to block a shot by Skyline. The Eagles were held to a single goal in the 3-1 championship game. Chidester in front of the net, who headed in a shot to wrap it up. Goalie Travis Godfrey, who's only a junior, did the rest. Playing his usual outstanding game in goal, he shut down the powerful Eagle attack. "Normally we score first," coach Richard Cook stated afterwards. after-wards. "It was a good test for us to see how we'd respond after falling behind. These kids played with a lot of confidence all year, and they responded when they had to." Cook praised the Eagles, who shot almost the same number of times as the Vikes. Viewmont had a powerful scoring group on the field this year, and were seldom if ever outshot in a game. "They're a very quick and physical phy-sical team," he stated. "That Lockwood is outstanding." But so were the Vikings, who in the end proved their supporters right, their critics wrong, and themselves to be as good under fire as any state champion. Lauder began the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute, and then passed to Dave Chidester for a score in the 21st minute. A goal by Jeff Beckman three minutes later made it 3-0 at the half. Bountiful scored on a penalty kick in the second 40 minutes, but two more Lauder scores propelled the Vikes into Thursday's championship cham-pionship game with Skyline. |
