Show Young Parents' grads successful ''i ft " I - - . , A By VICKI CROCCO i Davis County's Young Parents ! School will be saying farewell to two exceptional students this June, Danielle Trejo and Becky Jay. The Young Parents school is a facility located adjacent to the Davis Area Vocational Center which provides classes and daycare day-care for pregnant students and mothers determined to finish their high school educations. Danielle and her husband Richard Trejo had their baby Tory, two years ago when Danielle was 15. After completing summer school and night school classes, along with the regular day class schedule, Danielle has enough credits cre-dits to graduate at 17-years-old. Because of state regulations, she will need to take classes next year at DAVC, but all of these will be college accredited classes. She will then attend Weber State College to study distributive technology and fashion merchandising. "I don't think I could have done it without my family. I wasn't really real-ly thinking I'd go this far. I was just hoping to finish high school," said Danielle. "This is a really good school. The teachers are great. They really help work out problems," Danielle said. "Some girls come in really wiped out. You don't know how long they have been up with their babies, sometimes for days," said Young Parents' teacher Barbara Peterson. "They really have to be determined to finish at all, but to finish early like Danielle is extraordinary." ex-traordinary." Becky Jay's baby, Ashley, is only ten weeks old, yet Becky is graduating with a higher gpa than she had last year. "I like being a mother. I wouldn't change it now. I like being married too. It's fun," Becky said. Becky, Ashley and her husband, Mike Jay, all live with her mother to save for the college funds. Becky starts full-time June 20 at LDS Business College where she'll study retail and management. It's been a hard year. I wouldn't have graduated if it wasn't for this school, and my family's support," she said. "If I were going to give advice to a teenager who got pregnant, I'd BECKY JAY say, 'Finish your education. Don't think the world is coming to an end. It's not. You can be as happy as I am. You can do anything you want to do. It helps to have emotional support, like this school, and family fami-ly gives, but if you want to go to school, go!' " Becky. |
