A total of $50 in prizes is being offered the Fourth of July Queen and her attendants. Concluding Friday's events will be a married folks' dance at 9 pm. in the Memorial Hall. Saturday events Saturday will begin with a chuckwagon breakfast from 7 (cont. on back page, col. 4) One of the biggest celebrations celebra-tions in Springville and Utah County began here last eve-nin eve-nin and will continue through Saturday in what is to be the first annual Art City Days. Thousands of people from this and surrounding cities and many former residents are expected ex-pected to be here for the various var-ious events. The opening event Wednesday Wednes-day evening, was the 3-act play, "Down to Earth," by the Springville Playhouse and this will continue Friday and Saturday Sat-urday nights, 8:15 p.m., in the Civic Center Theatre (down stairs) . Other events The big celebration will move into other major events today, with the opening of the carnival car-nival and other concessions at the City Park. At 7 p.m., will be the big "Artists of Life," banquet, in Kolob Stake House, directed by Dr. Richard K. Miner. Mi-ner. At this time an award will be made to an outstanding youth leader, teacher, community commun-ity service leader, cultural arts leader and an organized civic group. These will be announced from a list of finalists. This phase of the celebration is being be-ing sponsored to pay tribute to those individuals and organizations organ-izations who have put forth special effort in the various categories. Also at 6:30 p.m. will begin two ball games: Springville Docs vs Kolob and the Spanish Fork Dodges vs Spanish Fork Yankees at North Ball Park. Friday's schedule will open with a Sidewalk Bazaar along Main Street sponsored by the local merchants, beginning at 10 a.m. From 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a steak fry on the City Park. At 6 p.m. baseball games are scheduled at Memorial Park and at 6:30 p.m. there will be a square dance exhibition exhibi-tion at the City Park, followed follow-ed by an band concert. Junior rodeo The Hobble Creek Riding Club will hold a Junior Rodeo at 8 p.m. at the North P ark rodeo grounds, under the chairmanship chair-manship of Ned Shoell. Events will include calf riding, pony racing, greased pig contest, and other events for the kids. A Shetland pony will be given away to the boy or girl who can place a rope around its neck in the arena. A fireworks display will be held at the rodeo ro-deo grounds after the rodeo. Appearing also at the junior rodeo will be the junior royalty, including Karen Ann Barney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Barney, queen; Lora Lea Brian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Brian, first attendant and Mar-ri Mar-ri Ann Marrott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Marrott, second sec-ond attendant. Also during the junior rodeo event, a contest to select a queen for the Fourth of July rodeo, sponsored by the Riding Rid-ing Club, will take place. Those over 16 years of age are eligible eli-gible with horsemanship and Art City Days events benin (continued from page 1) to 10 a.m. at the City Park, followed by a mammoth parade pa-rade at 10 a.m. Chairman Mays Anderson reports that over a hundred units have been lined up. It is expected to be the largest lar-gest parade ever seen in SpringviUe, featuring all the top bands in the area. The line of march will be from Averett Ave. down Fourth South to Main Street and then north on Main Street. Police Chief Ashley Graham asks that cars parked on Main Street be backed to curb. After the parade, the Utah Valley Old Car Club will hold a state-wide old car show and competition at the civic center. Cars will participate in the parade pa-rade and will be on display in the civic center parking lot until un-til the contests begin at 1 p.m. From 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a steak fry at City Park. A teen dance is scheduled for 9 p.m. on Allen's parking lot. Chairman Pete Morgan reports re-ports that "The Saints" will furnish the music, and a special spec-ial display of sports cars and hotrods has been lined up for the occasion. Flower show A big event added to the celebration cel-ebration is a flower show sponsored spon-sored by the newly-organized Art City Garden Club. Entries will be received at the civic center Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by the judging. The flower show will be open to the public Friday and Saturday Satur-day afternoons and evenings at the civic center. Throughout the celebration there will be art shows at the art gallery and the civic center, cen-ter, as well as tours of the DUP museum. Rell Francis urges all who paint to enter the art show at the civic center. Bring paintings paint-ings on easels. The paintings will be shown in the council room. Running throughout the day Saturday will be a golf contest at the new Hobble Creek Golf Course as well as mountain cycle races in the east foothills, sponsored by the SpringviUe Jaycees. The Utah Hound Dog Association will hold hound dog trials throughout the day at Kellys Grove in Hobble Creek Canyon. |
