Show Burton files for third term in house Representative Laurence J. j Burton, who has represented ' Utah's First Congressional District Dis-trict the past two terms, has announced his candidacy for a third term. Burton was first elected to the Congressional seat November Novem-ber 6, 1962, and was returned to Congress with a large margin mar-gin by the voters November 3, 1964. In his first term the Utah Republican as assigned to the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, where he has led the fierht for authorization Rep. Lawrence J. Burton of ! Ogden is a candidate on the Republican ticket for repre-1 repre-1 j sentative from Davis and Utah Counties, 1st Con. Dist. of Canyonlands National Park, and the Dixie Project and for necessary funds for the Central Cen-tral Utah and Weber Basin Projects. At the end of the term he was named to the Public Land Law Review Commission. Com-mission. At the beginning of his second sec-ond term his outstanding performance per-formance during his first term was rewarded by his appointment appoint-ment to a second major committee, com-mittee, the Committee on Agriculture, Ag-riculture, and reappointment to he Public Land Law Review Commission. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, he has helped obtain approval of the Monroe-AnnabelLa and Emery County Watershed Projects and has led out in other legislation for the benefit of Utah farmers farm-ers and stockmen. "Since the 1965 Utah Legislature Legis-lature realigned the congressional congres-sional district boundaries, I will be seeking election for the first time in Davis and Utah counties," coun-ties," Burton pointed out in announcing his candidacy. Before his election to Congress, Con-gress, Representative Burton was administrative assistant to former Governor George D. Clyde for nearly three years. Prior to that he was an assistant assis-tant professor of political science sci-ence at Weber State College, Ogden. For two years, 1957-58, 1957-58, he acted as legislative assistant as-sistant to former Congressman H. Aldous Dixon, who represented repre-sented Utah's First District at that time. A native Utahn' Representative Representa-tive Burton is a graduate of Weber State College, where he was student body president and a champion debater. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah State University, Uni-versity, and has done additional graduate work at George Washington and Georgetown Universities in Washington, D. C. He has been active in civic and church affairs in Ogden, where he maintains his residence. resi-dence. He and his wife, the former Janice Shupe of North Ogden, have four children. |
