Now they're representing SUSC in the Novice Debate Nationals. "The SUSC freshmen will compete at the Novice Nationals Mar. 27-29 in Chicago," said M. L. Smith, SUSC forensic coach. "They're a strong and experienced team; I expect they will break into the out rounds, making it to at least the octa or quarter finals." Both Harvey and Romero are majoring in Communications and political science at SUSC, Harvey is the son of Dennis and Lorraine Harvey, West Jordan. Romero is the son of C. Rudolf and Marietta Romero, West Jordan. "SUSC has been represented at the Novice Nationals, held annually at Northwestern University, for the past two years," Sm'th said, "but we've never had a team end with better than a 4-4 record. Our team this y year could be a real winner." The Harvey-Romero team has earned a long list of honors this year, including first place wins at the University of Southern California and at the Pikes Peak Tournament in Colorado Springs. They have won second place honors at California State, Fullerton, and at the University of Arizona. Semi-final honors were won at the University of San Francisco; quarterfinals quarter-finals at the University of California, Berkeley; and octa-final wins at Greater Salt Lake and at Wichita State. Harvey won first place in speaker points at Cal State Fullerton, second at the University of Arizona, and third at the University of California, Berkeley. Romero took first in speaker points at the University of San Francisco and two thirds, one at the University of California, Berkeley, the Two teams will represent Southern Utah State College at the Junior Debate Nationals .Mar. 27-29 at Johnson County College, Kansas City, Kan. Kevin Astle and Chris Lathrop, graduates of Hillcrest and Orem High Schools, respectively, will enter the tournament as a top-seated team according to SUSC Forensic Coach M. L. Smith. The second team, Jackie Clegg, another Orem High graduate, and Denise Brooks, Bingham High School, could well be a "surprise team," Smith said. "Lathrop and Vickie Green represented SUSC last year in the nationals, coming home with a fifth place win," Smith said. The duo finished debate this season with an impressive im-pressive record which includes two first place wins, one at Boise State University in senior division competition, the other at the Pikes Peak tournament, Colorado Springs, in junior : competition. Lathrop and Astle also earned honors in the semi-finals in junior competition a at the University of Utah; in the quarter-finals in senior competition at the University of Southern California and junior division at Wichita State; and in the octa-finals at the University of Arizona, senior division. Astle, a freshman political science-communications science-communications major at SUSC, also took top place in speaker pints, senikor d division, at the University of Utrah Fall Scrimmage. The 1980 graduate of Hillcrest High School is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence W. Astle, Sandy. Lathrop was first in speaker points in senior division competition at the University of Southern California. He is a junior communications com-munications major at SUSC, a 1978 graduate of Orem High School, and the son of Joan Lathrop, San Luis Obispo, Calif, and James Lathrop, Dallas, Tex.
