Show PHStracksters shine at Page PAGE, Ariz. Individuals In-dividuals on the Parowan High track team fared well at the tough Page Invitational Saturday, their first competition of the year. Over 20 teams from four states competed in both the boys' and girls' divisions a at the non-scoring non-scoring meet, most schools larger than Parowan. The only PHS girl to place was junior Misti Bentley, who took second in the 400 meter run. Her clocking of 1:04 was just three seconds off her 1-A state-record time of last year. Bentley hopes to break the one-minute barrier this year. Scott Freeborn had an outstanding day, said PHS track coach Bob Tobler. Freeborn ran the 400-meter 400-meter distance three times at the meet, each time turning in an outstanding out-standing clocking. In his preliminary heat of the individual 400-meter 400-meter run, Freeborn won with a 52.16 timing. He bettered that in the finals, also winning the meet championship. His 52.0 in the finals was just .9 second off the 1-A state record in the 400. He also ran a 52.4 in the anchor leg of the mile relay. Junior Doug Her-mansen Her-mansen placed fourth in the 800 meters, getting a 2:09. "Doug will come on very quickly," said Tobler. "I expect he'll run a 2.06 or 2:07 at the Cedar meet, and get even better from there." (The Rams were to have participated in a four-way track meet Tuesday at Southern Utah State College.) The mile relay team of Freeborn, Hermansen, Doug Rogerson and John Rex, took third with a time of 3:42. "The mile relay time was just two seconds off the time that won the region last year," said Tobler, "and just seven seconds off the state record time. They did well for such an early meet." Lloyd Baker, though placing ninth at 10:43 in the two-mile run, still turned in a time just two seconds off the school record. t "I'm tickled to death with some of our performances per-formances at Page," Tobler said. "We took only nine boys down there, and we have 15 or 16 working with us now. We're bound to get much stronger." |
