Show Founders to be cited Founders and early residents of Iron County are among those to be honored in the memorial hall of the new headquarters of the Sons of Utah Pioneers now under construction in Salt Lake City. The 70-foot-long gallery will be lined with permanent per-manent plaques bearing names of pioneer men and women. The plaques are sponsored by families, individuals or businesses. A contribution con-tribution of $100 is requested for each name. Pioneers who migrated to or were born in Utah or surrounding areas will be memorialized in two main groups, according to K. Grant Hale, national president of SUP. One vill include those of 1847 to 1869 (before the coming of the railroad), and the second will name those of 1869 to 1899. Their names and the names of their sponsors will also be catalogued in the building's historical library, Hale said. Iron County settlers sponsored thus far are Louis R. Chaffin, Cedar City; Zechariah B. Decker Sr., Nancy Bean Decker, Zechariah B. Decker Jr., Emma Seraphine Smith Decker, Jesse N. Smith, Emma S. West Smith, Margaret F. West Smith, Janet M. Johnson Smith, and Augusta M. Outzen Smith, Parowan; William Barton, Sarah West Barton, and Mary Williamson Barton, Paragonah. Additional pioneer names, together with birth and death dates and locations, are being sought by the SUP. To ensure alphabetical placement in the memorial hall they should be sent by mid-April mid-April with sponsoring (tax-deductible) donations to Sons of Utah Pioneers, 3357 S. 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. |
