Mur-dock. The team members took many honors at the recent meet at Brigham Young University. Class wins championship Iron County's American Eagles Adult Handicapped CJass captured the state Special Olympics basketball championship, small school division, recently at Brigham Young University. Coached by Marsha Perkins, who also led the local team to a squad-win in 100-meter swim competition, the Eagles won the title with a 32-18 win over a special education class from Bryce Valley. "There were a dozen teams in competition," Coach Perkins said. "Three teams tied for first place; ours, a team from northern Utah and the Garfield team coached by Frank Venuti. Venuti's team drew a bye in the play-off so we played them after defeating the other team." "The Eagles finished the indoor games with the basketball championship, the team win in swimming swim-ming and five other first and second place swim wins," indicated Virginia Higbee, area Special Olympics coordinator. "That's an excellent showing considering it's the first year the Eagles have competed in these sports." Djuana Veigner, Robert Murdock and Laurie Stephens, Cedar City, won first place honors in the 25-meter swim competition in their respective age groups. Second place winners were Debra Hulet, New Castle; and Kathy Haight, Cedar City, also for the 25-meter. Another area winner, Dan Berry, Escalante. won first place in the 25-meter 25-meter swim contest and in run, dribble and shoot competition. Other winners were Brenda Griffin, Escalante, with a first in gymnastic floor exercises; Doug Davis, Escalante; and Chip Dutton, Cannonville, who took first in tumbling. "This is the first year Venuti's team competed in gymnastics," Mrs. Higbee said. "They have done an excellent job as a first-year team." |
