Show Lady T-birds must Qualify for Regional All our efforts to qualify for regional competition will be made this week by Southern Utah State Colelge women track athletes and coaches. The Thunderbird women will battle in the Utah Women's Championships Friday in Salt Lake City. The meet, featuring all of Utah's four-year schools which have women's track programs, is being hosted by the University of Utah. Scheduled to compete are SUSC, Weber State, Brigham Young University, Utah State university, and ' University of Utah. Some of the effort to qualify SUSC athletes in the regional May 9-10 at Fort Collins, Colorado,, will come in the political (persuasion) arena. "We'd like to have one more chance to qualify our 800 medley relay team, but that event isn't curently scheduled to be run this week," Ben Davidson, SUSC coach, says. "We are trying to get them to schedule that event." Last week at the Idaho State University "Potato Classic," the T-Bird 800 medley relay team came within 2.5 seconds of qualifying for regionals. Team members are convinced con-vinced they can qualify with one more try. The only two individuals on the team who have qualified were also the only two to place at ISU last week. Mary Damiani finished second in the 800 with a school record time of 2:16.23, and Chris Whetten finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17-7. The relay team finished, second with a time of 1 : 55.57. Damiani, who has been SUSC's most consistent performer this season, will move from her usual 800 meter race to the 1500 meters this week. She will be trying to qualify for the regionals in that event. "All of our people are making improvements each week," Davidson explains. "It's just too bad we couldn't have had some of this good weather earlier; it's made a big difference for us." Besides Whetten and Damiani, most likely point winners for SUSC this week are Theresa Versluis and Ann Wiliams in the shot put, and Mary Bryant in the discus. |
