Show Rodeo Action during Wild West Week National Intercollegiate Rodeo action Friday and Saturday will top off Wild West Week activities at Southern Utah State College. Rodeo action will begin both evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Iron Rangers Arena located southwest of Cedar City. An afternoon performance per-formance will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The rodeo festivities will include competition between 12 Intermountain colleges and universities including SUSC,- Boise State University, College of Southern Idaho, Idaho State University, Dixie College, Snow College, Utah State University, Weber State College, University of Utah, Utah Technical colleges at Salt Lake City and Provo- . Orem, and for the first time, from Northern Nevada Community College, Elko. Along with regulation rodeo action, specialty contests are being planned by the SUSC Rodeo Club, sponsor of the May 2-3 rodeo. Tickets for the intercollegiate in-tercollegiate rodeo are available at $1.50 for childrfen under 12 and for senior citizens, $3 for adults and students, and at a special family rate of $10 according to Lark Flanigan rodeo club advisor. All SUSC students with activity cards will be admitted free. "We'll be running double eliminations in the regular rodeo competition, with the top 10 contenders in each event ; competing in the championship round Saturday evening," Flanigan said. The stock contractor again this year is Color Country Rodeos out of Panguitch. "Tom Simkins has some of the best stock in the state," Flanigan said. "We're planning to have a real good show." Each of the 12 participating par-ticipating schools hosts a rodeo during the season. The final meet this year-before the nationals-will be held at Uah State University May 16-17. Members of the SUSC rodeo team this year include Scott Robins, Scipio, Millard County, team and calf roping; Randy Blackburn, Loa, Wayne County, bull and bareback riding; Mark Leany, Las Vegas, bull riding; Daniel DeJolie, Window Rock, Arizona, bull riding; Shane Flanigan, Cedar City, barback and bull riding; Derk Jones, Malad, Idaho, team roping; and Harvey Homer, Las Vegas, team and calf roping. DesiRea Potter,, Loa, and Gina Johnson, Yucca Valley, California, round out the SUSC team as barrel racers. In intercollegiate rodeo action, Flanigan said, women compete in barrel racing, goat tying, team and breakaway roping. Men compete in calf and team roping, bull-dogging, bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding. |
