At the same tournament, Connell was a finalist in extemp and tied for third place in expository speaking with Appel Tuxhorn, a veteran squad member from West Jordan. Connell was second place in oratory at the U of U contest. Other honors in individual in-dividual events went to Phil Shelburne and Debbie Evans who were finalists in interpretive speaking. Shelburne, a freshman from Las Vegas, was a finalist in prose competition at the U of U. Evans, a soph-more soph-more liom Salt Lake City, qualified for the nationals last year in expository writing.
