Show Teachers salaries up in Iron County Salary schedules for bachelor-degree teachers in the Iron County School District were boosted by an average of $1,272 or 10.4 percent this year, according to the Utah Foundation, a private research organization. In addition, most teachers not at the top of the salary scale also received an annual experience ex-perience increment averaging another $514. This provided for, said the report, a total increase in-crease for a teacher who had not reached the top step of an average of $1,786 or 14.6 percent during the 1980-81 school year. However, the report points out that these increases are less than the state-wide average of an increase of $2,173 or 16.7 percent. The increases in-creases ranged from 14.2 percent in Grand County School District to 29.5 percent in Emery County School District. The Emery schools increase, however, included in-cluded a special salary supplement of between $1,855 and $2,150 which was provided from voted leeway funds. This salary supplement was furnished fur-nished to Emery school personnel in order to attract and retain teachers in this rapidly-growing rapidly-growing county. The starting for a teacher with a bachelor's degree in Iron County this year is $11,273. The salary schedules include regular increases for experience and added academic training. Thus, experienced teachers with a master's degree would receive up to $19,840 in the district. Foundation analysts point out that the average starting salary in Utah this year is $11,736, and the average maximum salary for a teacher with a master's degree is $20,402, putting Iron County somewhat behind the rest of the state. Beginning salaries in Utah for a teacher with a bachelor's degree range from $11,273 in Iron County to $13,625 in Emery Coutny District. Maximum salaries for a teacher with a master's degree vary from $17,685 in the Piute County District to $22,341 in Murray School District. All of the above salary amounts are for approximately ap-proximately 180-185 teaching days or about nine months of actual service. Teachers with special duties and those who teach summer . school, of course, would i receive added com-i com-i pensation for such ser- vice. According to the Foundation, a teacher with a bachelor's degree who began teaching in the Iron County School District during the 1975-75 school year received $8,082. Today, that same teacher with five years of experience would receive $13,640, which represents an increase of $5,558 or 68.8 percent for the five-year five-year period. Approximately Ap-proximately $4,103 of that increase represents changes in the salary schedules and $1,455 represents annual salary increments. Statewide, total salary increases (schedules plus increments) for a teacher who began a Utah teaching career five years ago was $6,381, or 79.9 percent. Salaries paid to classroom teachers in Utah are slightly better that the Mountain States average when an adjustment ad-justment is made for a special retirement contribution made in Utah, but not in most of the other states. According Ac-cording to National Education Association estimates, the average salary for classroom teachers in the Mountain States was $15,264.
