Show Kris Webster Monica Swain Dana Giles CHS tennis squad drops state matches number two position all year, defeated first an opponent from Payson, then a foe from Carbon, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. She went to state as the top number two player. Miss Giles went as the number two seed, after defeating her opposite number from Payson, then dropping her finals match to a Springville player 6-2, 6-3. The doubles team of Jennifer Hunter and Janae Bickmore won their first round regional match against a Carbon duo, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, then lost to a Payson team, 6-3, 6-3. Three Cedar High School tennis players returned home Friday without a victory in the state 3-A tennis playoffs at the Sherwood Hills Racquet Club In Provo. Number one singles player Kris Webster, number two Monica Swain and number three Dana Giles were all defeated in the first round of the playoffs. Miss Webster lost 6-1, 6-1 6-1 to Murray's number one player. Miss Swain dropped her match to a Bountiful team member 6-0, 6-2. Miss Giles was on the short end of a 6-0, 7-5 decision to a player from Davis High School. "I think we were a bit outclassed when we got to state," said Coach Sandy Taylor. "It was a good experience, though, in that the girls know what they're up against now." Though they did not win a match at state, Mrs. Taylor was still pleased with the team's season: "This was the first time Cedar has had a tennis program in recent years. The girls were all young and inexperienced, but were s still able to claim second place in our division. They will all be back next year, and will only get better." Miss Webster and Miss Giles are sophomores, while Miss Swain is just a freshman. The three advanced to state by placing among the top three in regional playoffs at Springville. At regionals, Miss Webster defeated first a Carbon, then a Spanish Fork player, before falling toSpringville's top seed 6-2, 6-4 in the finals. She entered state as the division's number two seed.
