This past decade, Utah's abortion laws have been challenged by David Dolowitz, an ACLU lawyer, Thanks to Matheson, he is now on the family services state board even though he is currently challenging Utah's law, requiring "notification, if possible," an unmarried minor's parents before and abortionist can abort her. Matheson himself chided those who objected to the agenda for the family conference in Utah. Maybe he preferred that abortion and ERA be accepted in the regional conference, without debate. The people there are devout Christians and were brought to that island by Father Duncan, a missionary from England so he could , teach them- and relieve them of the1 burdens being placed upon them by the Church of England and British Columbia. They are educated, live in nice modern homes, run a lumber mill and a fish hatchery. While in Metlakatla we tasted fresh 1 salmon for the first time and experienced ex-perienced digging for crab, picking beautiful salmon berries, and enjoying the scenery. We traveled by seaplane every two weeks to Ketchikan-about 17 miles a away--and enjoyed every minute of the 10-minute flight over the water. We are presently working in the mission office here in Anchorage and enjoy meeting the missionaries coming and going. Alaska is a beautiful state and the people are outgoing and friendly. His appointments ap-pointments seem to be contrary to his statements. Feminists and members of the militant National Organization of Women (now boycotting Utah) are high on his list. Some whom Matheson appointed are: feminist Beth Jarman, as "administrative "ad-ministrative assistant for community affairs"; Jarman's sister, Eleanor Lewis, who was given a judicial appointment ap-pointment to the Fifth Circuit Court; and Christine Durham, proponent ot the ERA, w who was given a judicial ap- jointment to the Third Judicial court-Esther court-Esther Lancia, an nonorary committee com-mittee member of Planned Parenthood, was appointed by Bella Abzug as a delegate-at-large to the IWY Conference Con-ference in Houston where she supported Bella's pro-plan which included passage of ERA and reproductive freedom (abortion on demand).
