Show I Gallery to show films The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Southern Utah State College, recently announced that a series of four film programs will be presented in the gallery during the current academic year. Each film program will be shown on two dates. ' According to Prof. ; Thomas A. Leek, gallery curator, the films were made possible by Friends of the Gallery, a citizens' support organization dedicated to 'promoting cultural affairs through the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. : The film series will include two programs: "With Paint on Canvas: Kes Zapkus," Nov, 6 and 10; and "David Nash, British Sculptor" and "Kay Sage, American Surrealist Painter," May 6 and 7. There will be two programs featuring the cinematography of artist-filmmaker artist-filmmaker Kenneth Anger in his "Magick Lantern Cycle," January 8 and 12 and March 4 and 5. For Kenneth Anger, "Making a movie is casting a spell." He claims "Magick" as his "lifework', and "the cinematograph" for his "Magick weapon." The artist dubs to collection of his works "The Magick Lantern Cycle," has adopted Aleister Crowley as his guru, sees' films to be "a search for light and enlightment" and sees Lucifer not as the devil but as "Venus-the Morning Star." To date, . all of his films have been evocations or invocations, in-vocations, attempting to conjure primal forces which, once visually released, are designed to have the effect of "casting a spell" on the audience. The "Magick" in the film is related to the "Magickal" effect of the film on the audience., Kenneth Anger's film can be enjoyed on many levels, and a viewer does . not necessarily have to be familiar with "Magick" to appreciate the beauty and strength of his cinema.
