Show Treasury Department Makes 'Penny Appeal' The United States Treasury de- partment is . making an appeal through the schools of the nation na-tion for all people in the country to get small coins into circulation. It is especially desired that pennies pen-nies and nickels be released from home banks and other containers. The circulation of such coins, says Nellie Taylor Ross, director . of the Mint,, will save the Gov- ernment from using precious metal to make new coins. Miss Ross' states, "That 4600 tons of copper consumed last year in making the one cent pieces, would have- met the combined requirements re-quirements ' of: copper for building two criuses, two destroyers, 1245 flying fortresses, 120 field guns and 120 howitzers; or enough for one and one 'quarter million shells for our big field guns." Other important metals are also in the small coins metals sorely needed for war production. One of the most patriotic things 1 that Americans can do today is to get those pmall coins from their hiding plapes and spend them, substituting larger coins for savings sav-ings purposes. |
