Irwin Foster In Line For Four Awards Coming up for four military awards is Lieutenant Irwin Foster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Foster of this city, who has been in active service in Egypt and Palestine since early July. Information Infor-mation regarding h i s citations came in a letter from Lieut. Foster Fos-ter to his parents, received Dec. 14. It was written in Egypt Nov. 28, hence it is still late news as overseas mail goes. Lists Possible Medals Included in the awards are the medal for at least 12 months of service, provided it began before Dec. 7, 1941. Second is the "Airmen's "Air-men's Medal", given after 100 hours of actual combat and the sinking of a number of boats or shooting clown ot two enemy planes. Third will be either the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Fly-ing Cross or Distinguished Service j Cross for meritous service in action, ac-tion, and fourth is the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. Lieut. Foster enlisted in the Army air corps Nov. 5, 1941, grad- ' (Continued on page three) Irwin Foster Letter (Continued from first page) uating from Williams Field, May 21, 1942. He flies one of th.e big Army bombers and since going overseas in early July of this year, he has been in active service serv-ice in Egypt and Palestine, and has thus met full requirements for the first medal in length of service. He doesn't say how many planes he has brought out of the air, and says his wounds are merely a few scratches from a bullet entering the cockpit on his side of the plane and shattering the glass. Reviewing his experience on the desert, he says, "I had three en- gines shot out in the desert in enemy territory, but made a - forced wneeis-up landing, aim : after 24 hours he and his crew ; were picked up by the British and brought safely home." He promises more details later, says he is well and likes his present location, and hopes they won't have to move. He makes the military quarters in Egypt sound pretty good, the weather perfect, a swell officers' club with cinema, tennis courts and good food. a Has 4-Day Leave Having a four-day leave in No- vember, he visited the big city, including a view of the Sphinx and the Pyramids. The city, he g says is so crowded it was diffi- g cult to find stopping quarters and the prices were sky-high and H the four-days' leave practically S emptied his pocketbook, but it g was worth it, he figures. There p is no sound of blues in it. Erwin's letter and his attitude is cheer- s irig and reassuring to his folks H at home. p |
