Show D.U.P. Building May Be Located On County Jail Site Architect Chooses Spot As Best One Available, All Groups Satisfied As Commissioners Agree Possibility of the building to be donated to the D.TJ.P. and the City of St. George being located on the grounds now occupied by the county jail was seen in a letter received by Mayor Albert E. Miller from Walter C. Jago, architect. Mr. Jago recently investigated possible pos-sible sites for the building at the request of Mrs. Hortense Odium who is donating the money for its construction. After looking over the locations available, Mr. Jago was impressed with the spot now occupied by the county jail and at his request Mayor Miller, city officials and D.U.P. officers urged the county commissioners to remove the jail and allow the site to be used for the proposed building. Mayor Miller in particular was active in securing a favorable report re-port from the commissioners. He also took Mr. Jago on an inspection inspec-tion tour of the city and its public buildings. County D.U.P. officers also expressed their appreciation for the help given them by the county commissioneers in agreeing to let them have the use of the county property. In agreeing to remove re-move the jail the commissioneers did so with knowledge that the building was antiquated and a new structure was needed by the county. Building Cost High The construction of the building as drawn by Mr. Jago, will run considerably more than Mrs. Odium . anticipated, but reports from a source close to her indicated indicat-ed that she is willing to spend the additional money in order that a building might be constructed that would be a lasting monument to the pioneers. Rooms are to be provided for city offices. With the county office of-fice located in the courthouse, officials say that the grouping of the city and county offices will facilitate matters for St. George citizens. The groups interested in the building have expressed themselves them-selves as well pleased with the suggested location. |
