Show j Plans Made For Study Of Forage Grasses Here j Dr. Rudger H. Walker, soil' conservationist of the intermoun- j tain forest and range experiment i station located at Ogden was in j St. George the past week to ar-1 range for experimental reseeding plots of range land. The purpose of these experiments is to study different forage grasses which may be adaptable to ranges of southern Utah. A series of plots were laid out in the south pasture of the Sim-wit j Indian reservation, under Doctor J : Walker's supervision, in which j crested wheat grass, western wheat grass and bulbous blue-; blue-; grass were planted. Doctor Walker explained that grass has proven very successful in the plains of the Dakotas where rainfall is very light and it is hoped that it may prove equally successful in this section. While here, he made arrangements arrange-ments with P. D. Spilsbury, head of the agricultural and mechanic I arts department at the Dixie col- j lege, to make field observations on the plantings and send in reports re-ports to the forest service at Ogden. I Doctor Walker was formerly assistant as-sistant chief of the soils depart-jment depart-jment at Iowa State college at Ames, Iowa, at which school he became acquainted with Dr. D. Elden Beck and P. D. Spilsbury, who received degrees from that institution. |
