Show DIXIE FLIERS BREAK RECORD (Salt Lake Tribuner"""''"' Dixie has broken a record that has stood in Utah basketball history since the tourney was first taken over by the state athletic association in 1920. Prior to 1928 a different champion has been crowned every year,' and in eight years there were eight champions. Dixie is twice champions now. The Fliers annexed the championship champion-ship in 1925 and went to Chicago to bring back the consolation championship champion-ship from the national turnament. This Dixie team also will go back this year, with its eyes on the national bunting this time. The 1928 champions are one of the classiest teams that has ever come from the south and one of the really great teams of the state. They play such effortless ball. Every pass is headed for a spot where a man is supposed sup-posed to be. There is not a wasted motion. A play starts from every position posi-tion on the floor and when the men are not in position the man holds the ball until he knows where the play is going. The Fliers always have plenty in reserve and are a fine collection col-lection of athletes. A survey of tournament scores indicates indi-cates how far ahead Dixie was of the teams it played. Bingham, the third day, was the only team to come within fifteen points of the champions. They held them to a 30-26 count. Dixie won the first night from Boxelder, 40 to 19. The second night Provo was beaten 39 to 16. Bingham fell the third night and Pleasant Grove lost the championship champ-ionship 34 to 19. That gives Dixie 143 points to 80 for its opponents. Four of the players on the team have seen previous tournament experience. El wood Romney, captain and forward; L. Cox, center; K. Cox and Pectol, guards, all came to the state meet last year. In 1927 Dixie went out the third night at the hands of the Saints. The team is a young one, however. The other members of the championship crew are Karl Stratton, forward; Cecil Gates, forward; Reid Wittwer, guard; Preston Hafen, center. Following the championship game of Saturday night, Governor George H. Dem presented the- winning Dixie team the large silver basketball, emblematic em-blematic of the state high school basket bas-ket ball champions, to be in possession of the St. George school for the current, cur-rent, year. |
