Show LIQUOR OVERBOARD AS SHERIFF STOPS CARS Much liquor, some of which carried bonded labels, consigned to the big St. Patrick's day celebration staged by the road construction workers at Rock-ville Rock-ville last Friday night, failed to reach its destination, and instead of relieving reliev-ing the parched throats of these sturdy toilers, was thrown overboard when officers made their appearance and stopped and searched every approaching approach-ing car on the highway above Virgin. Learning of the party to be staged St. Patrick's eve when all loyal sons of Erin gather to celebrate in honor of the patron saint of Ireland, Sheriff Wm. Brooks and deputies Andrew J. Isom and Carl Caldwell decided to as near as possible cut off the supply of liquid refreshments. A visit to the scene of operations later in the evening even-ing showed they were not entirely successful suc-cessful in their efforts and that a generous supply of wet goods had leaked leak-ed in through other channels. Stationing themselves at the narrow bridge above Virgin the officers proceeded pro-ceeded to stop and search every car that showed up. That is, all but one. The driver of this machine, evidently fearing a hold-up when he was commanded com-manded to stop, unexpectedly stepped on the gas and sped away in the direction di-rection of Rockville. The action was unlooked for on the part of the officers offi-cers and they were nearly run down by the machine. Five shots were fired after him but these only served to cause him to accelerate his speed and probably increased his belief that he was the intended victim of hold-ups. From then on all the way from one to 15 cars were lined nn on 'the high way and accompanied by the merry tinkling of broken bottles which were thrown out of the machines, the officers of-ficers searched each and every car. Liquor was found in. one car containing contain-ing seven youths, one of whom took the responsibility and was fined $50 and costs for possession in Rockville that same night. Justice Arthur D. Cox of Rockville was called from his bed to conduct the trial. Evan Lee and Wm. H. Roberts, both of Virgin, were charged with possession posses-sion and appeared in the justice court at Virgin for trial. Both pled guilty, Lee receiving a fine of $175 and a suspended sus-pended jail sentence of 90 days. Roberts Rob-erts was fined $100 and costs and given a 60 day jail sentence which was suspended. sus-pended. The fines in both cases were paid. |
