Show !ZI0N HIGHWAY PRAISED BY DERN That the Zion-Mt. Carmel highway, when completed, will be one of the greatest attractions in the scenic section sec-tion of Utah was the belief expressed 'by Governor George H. Dern upon his ! return to Salt Lake from a tour of southern Utah. The governor was accompanied ac-companied on the trip by Mrs. Dern. Construction of the end of the road being built by the park service is progressing pro-gressing rapidly, the governor announced, an-nounced, and indications point to its completion by October, 1929. There will be seven switchbacks on the highway in climbing the wall of the canyon, Governor Dern said. The road will go through one tunnel 5800 feet in length. This tunnel will have windows from which the motorist may gaze upon the scene below. Other tunnels on the route will total 1100 feet in length. The governor said the road will be up to federal standards in every respect re-spect and will be different from most mountain roads in that there will be nothing about it to frighten the most timid traveler. While in the south, Governor Dern also inspected the road being constructed con-structed from the Shivwits Indian reservation res-ervation to the t Arizona line. The work on this project is advancing rapidly and it probably will be completed com-pleted by July 1, the governor reported. report-ed.
