Show HOW DIXIE WON BASKETBALL TITLE i Defeated Pleasant Grove in Finals Saturday Night by Score of 36 to 19 The following account of the final basketball game between Dixie and Pleasant Grove is taken from the Des-eret Des-eret News: The Dixie Fliers polished, speedy, powerful and plucky, romped away with the state scholastic basketball championship at the Deseret Gym Saturday night by defeating the fighting fight-ing Pleasant Grove quint Alpine division divi-sion champions, 36 to 19. It was the least sensational and spectacular championship game played play-ed in the state association series since 1919. The Grovers went into the game with a sense of grave foreboding,' due to the loss of their clever little star, L. Christiansen, all-state forward. However, How-ever, the boys in blue lacked nothing in courage, fighting on and on against tremendous odds. Loraine Cox the mighty basket charmer of the Fliers snagged nine field goals and Stratton, a forward ran up a total of eleven points. As usual Romney handled his team in precise fashion. Hayes of the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove team was the only member of the losing team to score more than one field goal. The guarding of Smith of the losers was exceptional. Christiansen, all-state forward and the human dynamo of the Pleasant Grove team was missing from the lineup line-up due to an injury received in the semi-final game. Glade Linebaugh, who had done good service as a substitute sub-stitute in the tournament was in Christiansen's place. The Grove town rooters were not dismayed by their tough break and cheered their idols at practice. Some L. D. S. rooters gave a cheer for the injured player. Loraine Cox opened the scoring with a spinning side shot from the left of the basket. The game was slow and the silence almost deafening at times. Smith shot far over toe bankboard and hit a lady squarely on top of the head. Kirk converted 'on Romney 's error. Pleasant Grove's team work was nil. Two set-ups were missed when the Grovers overlooked their mates camping alone under the basket. L. Cox scorred for Dixie and Linebaugh Line-baugh followed with P. G.'s first goal. Statton fouled and V. Christiansen converted. Cox bagged another basket from set-up position. Pectol made good on Hays' foul. They took time out and Dixie's band played a very pretty number. The quarter ended 7 to 4. 'Continued on Page Four) |
