Show THINK IT OVER. An impressive way to make vivid the enormity of the tax burden now borne by farmers was devised by John A. Vomacka, Minnesota farmer, who write to his congressman, congress-man, Conrad G. Sclvig, to the effect ef-fect that his taxes amounted to $306.54, and that in order to produce pro-duce this amount of money he would have to sell eighteen 300-pound 300-pound hogs, or 1500 bushels of oats, or 1300 .bushels or barley or rye, or 800 bushels of potatoes, or 600 bushels of wheat, or milk 10 cows for nine months. 'Five cows would produce the amount required, but I must milk five additional in order to procure pro-cure funds to buy the feed for the entire ten," he went on. "At the present price of farm land and the present rate of taxes, I am compelled to purchase my farm from the county treasurer about ence every nine years, and, in addition, I must keep the buildings build-ings in repair, insured, etc. So I am not real sure whether I am an owner or just a tenant. And then com'es the gas tax, the auto tax, tire hunting and fishing fees, etc., as we go merrily on. Think it over and see if you can figure out what the future has in store for us." J |
