Show Ed Johnson is named Uintah wrestling coach Ed Johnson, a 1969 Uintah High School graduate, has been selected as the new Uintah High school head wrestling coach. Uintah School District Superintendent Phil Ellis made the announcement an-nouncement of Johnson as coach Friday. Johnson placed first at the heavyweight class in the 1969 Class B State Tournament and garnered third places as a sophomore and junior. Johnson was named an honorable mention men-tion All-Ameriocan as a senior. The former Ute tussler wrestled for Marv Hess at the University of Utah from 1969 to 1974. Johnson was an assistant wrestling wrestl-ing and football coach at Uintah High School in 1976 and 1977 and was the head Uintah baseball coach for a number of years. When ask to comment on being named nam-ed as the Uintah head wrestling coach, Johnson remarked, "I have a goal of improving im-proving young men. This is the ideal situation to do that. We have a very great ' tradition in wrestling at Uintah High School and I intend to keep it going and to build total people. We will try to keep our dynasty going here at Uintah High School." Johnson added, "We had a lot of seniors last season on the Uintah High School wrestling team, but we are extremely ex-tremely strong with our sophomores and juniors coming back. We should be really real-ly strong with what we have coming back. I would be really unsatisfied if we don't finish high again in the state meet. The best wrestling program in the Western United States is in Vernal." Uintah Uin-tah placed first in 1983 at the state meet. Aggressive action on the mat is Johnson's goal. "I am going to try to get our wrestlers to be more aggressive and thrive for more action on the mat and more pins. My motto is to take them down and stick 'em. That is how I wrestled wrestl-ed in high school and that is how I teach," stated Johnson. 1 "I'm extremely proud to be a member of the Uintah wrestling program. I'm really looking forward to it," said Johnson. "I'm really excited to be back on the football staff at Uintah High School with Coach Curg Belcher and I am looking for the good things in that respect." Johnson was the head coach at Vernal Junior High for the 1982-83 season. His varsity team finished with a 13-0 record in dual meets and placed first in three tournaments. Vernal Junior High placed plac-ed fourth in a high school tournament. Kevin Dickson, Johnson's assistant coach during the past season, will be the new head wrestling coach at Vernal Junior High. "Kevin Dickson is very excited about being the head coach at Vernal Junior High and working with boys of the caliber in Vernal. I'm leaving a good Vernal Junior High program with good people in it," commented Johnson. Ed and Connie Johnson have three children, Mike, Krista and Brett. f. Ed Johnson will serve Uintah High School as head wrestling coach for the 1983-84 season. |
