Show TV censorship Dear Editor: So. Sister Censorship, that beguiling handmaiden of Communism, has slithered from her hole and come to ground in Utah. I have a feeling, however, that her stay here will be short lived. The high courts will throw the Marxist Wench back into the gutters where she belongs. It is a classic case of the cure being more dangerous that the problem. Pornography Por-nography is a problem, and children should not be exposed to its false and debasing values. But the fight against this problem must begin and end with the teaching of proper values to our children in the home. If they are given a solid foundation on which to build their characters, there is little to fear. But this is the parent's responsibilty. not the state's. We teach our children to swim so in case they have an unexpected encounter en-counter with water, they won't drown, but it is not the state's responsibility to teach them to swim, it is the parent's. So it is with pornography, it is the parent's responsibility to teach their children to survive an unexpected encounter with garbage, and there is a pretty good chance they will encounter it. it is as much a part of our world as anything else. I think it would not be a bad guess to say that one home in five now has a video cassette recorder and many of the video cassette rental outlets rent hard core pornographic movies to any adult who wants them, not to mention countless "R" rated movies that may bo rented by anyone over 18. Also, within ton years the satellite dishes you see sprouting up in back yards all over will probably 1h the size of a dinner plate and cost U?M and have many more movie channels than they do now. What will we do then, start shooting down satellites and blowing up transmitters? Once you let something like censorship get started, where do vou slop? We live in n world of rapid change and we must adapt to the good and the bad. Inviting in the Marxist Mistress is not the answer. There may well be a flood coming, com-ing, and we had better not waste time trying to push our children up a very flimsy tree. We had better make sure they know how to swim. RANCH SKAR1.K I |
