Show New kindergarten admission cut-off date announced Grant Drollinger. Uintah School District elementary director, reports the new kindergarten admission cut-off date. Questions continue to be asked regarding regar-ding the change in the kindergarten age. The 19S2 session of the legislature changed chang-ed the statue as follows, "local boards of education may establish and maintain full term or short term kindergartens open to resident children who are five years of age as of September 1 of the year in which admission is sought." The law is to become effective in the fall of 1983. The State School Board Office Of-fice gave the opinion that the phrase "who are five yars of age as of September 1 of the year in which admission admis-sion is sought" meant on or before September 1. It is generally understood that because the legislature removed the phrase "the date fixed by the local board of education," educa-tion," local boards no longer have latitude in admitting children under age who are capable of doing kindergarten work. Children must now be age five on or before September 1, to be admitted. This would include transfers from other states. Each elementary will conduct a Kindergarten Roundup to preregister students for the next school year. The school schedules are as follows: Ashley May 3, 1 p.m. Central May 12, 9 a.m. Discovery May 11, 10 a.m. Maeser May 3, 10 a.m. Naples May 5, 10 a.m. Todd May 3 & 4, 8:30 a.m. |
