Rowley ROOTED IN AMERICAN FREE ENTERPRISE I A matter of identity Like a lot of other folks, I needed some extra income. That's why I decided on pruning trees and shrubs to supplement my teacher's pay in California. It sounded sound-ed like a simple way to get extra dollars, with my horticultural background. I'd just advertise a little, go bid on the job on a weekday after school and then complete com-plete it on Saturday. It worked, but not quite like I'd planned. plann-ed. My experience hadn't been with California plants. There were so many I hadn't encountered in Utah; citrus, Cyprus, camelias, palms, rhododendrons, rhododen-drons, and eucalyptus. And a lot of others that I couldn't even identify. Well, it slowed me down, but didn't stop me. I'd look the yard over, discussing discuss-ing in detail only the plants I could identify. iden-tify. But I was making mental notes about the others. When the deal was made, I left quickly to avoid embarrassing embarrass-ing questions. Next thing was to hurry and get to a nursery before it closed. Not to buy plants. Just to look around until I saw plants like the ones I couldn't identify iden-tify back there in that yard. "May I help you sir?" the clerk would ask. "No, thanks," I'd say, "I'm just looking look-ing around." Writing too. Putting down the names of all those unfamiliar plants. Then it was home to the books. After reading about the unique characteristics and requirements re-quirements of each plant, I was ready for my Saturday performance. Considering all the time I spent with the books, I probably pro-bably didn't make much per hour. But it got better, because each new yard I looked look-ed at had plants I'd already looked up. So I discussed them confidently with the ow ner, just like I'd know n about them all my life. Here at our place, you can take some shortcuts in identifying plants that will grow in this area.
