Show I Oil shale for tests s mined at Hell's Hole 1 Three major oil companies, Sun, J Phillips and Gulf, began one of the first oil shale mining operations on the White River Project's federal land tracts at Hells Hole Canyon last week. Mining began last Thursday and will continue this week until 300,000 tons of oil shale, is removed from the mine. Nearly 100,000 tons of oil shale will be stored at the site and 200,000 tons will be shipped to Los Angeles, Calif, to be teted in a pilot Union retort, the same retort which is proposed to be built for the White River Shale Project. The mine is located in the mahogany lone which is the same zone as the Proposed White River Project mine. The purpose of the mine is to gain sign data on the retort and to termine the best way to upgrade this jJ'Pe of oil shale, said Cory Grua, White Rwr Shale, public relations. Upgrading involves a hydrogen Pess which removes the impurities n the shale oil so that it can be Wined at any refinery, Grua said.
