Josh Reynolds is preserved award by Tiger Leaguers Uintah High School's Josh Reynolds was presented a Dlaaue and gold watch by Boyd Van Tassel, who was representing parents of Tiger League members. The presentation was made Thursday during Tiger League wrestling practice at Uintah High School. "This plaque and gold watch is presented to Josh Reynolds in appreciation ap-preciation for the example and many hours that he has given to the wrestlers in the Tiger League Program as a coach and wrestler," stated Van Tassell. The award was sponsored by parents of tusslers in the Tiger League Program in 1981. Reynolds has been a varsity starter on the Uintah Ute wrestling team for three years from 1979 to 1981. Reynolds placed first in the 98 pound class at the state tournament in 1979 and netted second place at 119 pounds in the 1981 3-A 3-A State Tournament. Reynolds came pretty close to becoming a state champion in 1981. The match was tied after overtime and Tooele's Kirt Palmer was declared the winner. A portion of the article about Uintah's state championship in 1979 follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Feb. 22, 1979. "Uintah's Morgan . Woodhouse clinched the state championship cham-pionship for the Utes when he dropped Pleasant Grove's Jeff Faux for a fall with 16 seconds left in the round. The win by Woodhouse in the 132 pound class was the second first place title in a row for the Vernal tussler. Woodhouse placed first in 1978 at 119 pounds. ..Uintah's other first place crown winner was Josh Reynolds at 98 pounds.- Reynolds was the only sophomore to capture first place in the 3-A state meet. The Utes' Reynolds was defeated in a dual meet and the Region Five meet by Phil Torres of Tooele, who was picked to win the state title. However, the third time was the charm for Reynolds as he decisioned Torres, 6 to 3, for the first place title. The match was tied at 0-0 after one round of action. Reynolds nabbed an escape and a takedown in the second round for a 3-2 lead. Torres garnered a reversal. Reynolds pocketed an escape and a takedown and Torres picked up an escape in the third round to make the final score Reynolds, 6 and Torres, 3." Torres edged Reynolds, 10 to 8, for the region title. Reynolds reached a championship final for the second time in three years, but this time around the Uintah tussler placed second as the breaks didn't go his way. A portion of the story about the 1981 3-A state tournament follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Feb. 19, 1981. "A neutral in the second round gave Uintah's Josh Reynolds a 1-0 lead in the 119 pound championship contest, but the match was placed into overtime when Kirt Palmer of Tooele was awarded a neutral with five seconds left in the third round. A neutral was awarded to Palmer after a meeting between the match referee and a referee on the side of the mat. Reynolds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second round when he was given a stalling point with ten seconds left, but Palmer gained a reversal for a 2-1 lead in the third round of overtime. Reynolds gained a neutral to tie up the contest at 2-2 in overtime and Palmer was awarded the championship when criteria was used to determine the winner in overtime. A reversal is considered more important than a stalling point and a neutral and Palmer was declared the winner." Reynolds blanked Mark Bryant of Cedar City, 7 to 0, in the first round and downed Dave Merrill of Bountiful, 8 to 5. Reynolds advanced into the championship match when he downed Box Elder's Mike Richards, 5 to 2. Reynolds downed Palmer in the region meet, 5 to 3 and in a dual meet, 7 to 2. Reynolds pinned Mark Willard of Ben Lomond in the first round in the 1979 state tournament and pinned Mark Wilson of Springville. Reynolds nipped Stewart Richards of Box Elder, 3 to 2, in the semi-finals. Richards nabbed a take down in the first round for a 2-1 lead and Reynolds gained a reversal in the second round to take a 3 to 2 lead. Richards went on to place first in the 1980 and 1981 state tournaments. |
