Senator Orrin Hatch, who is chairman chair-man of the Government Regulation and Paperwork subcommittee of the Senate Small Business Committee is holding a full committee hearing May 5 in order to help determine the most workable and fair standard by which to measure what businesses are small for purposes of the various SBA programs. Senator Hatch is asking for input from all Utah small business owners concerning this issue. Now for the local issue, the proposal to sell the Uintah County Hospital to Hospital Corporation of America for $3.5 million is getting bent all out of shape. Emotions are running high, petitions are flying and accusations are being made concerning the operations of the county versus privately owned hospitals. Again, inflation and regulations have changed the operation of the hospital business. It is evident that no longer can a local government entity operate an acute care center as efficiently and as economically as the private sector. This is the genius of the free enterprise system, that provides the competition and the incentive. This cannot be matched mat-ched by governmental operations. Where free enterprise is willing to take the risks to provide the goods and services, it should be encouraged to do so. If free enterprise is willing to operate the Vernal hospital, we think it should be given the opportunity. Free enterprise enter-prise should also be given the opportunity oppor-tunity to provide a nursing home or rest home facility. Only when free enterprise enter-prise cannot provide these services should tax monies be used to provide the needed services. If we are ever to escape high taxes, we must first control local, state and federal spending. One of the best ways to control government spending is to give the job to free enterprise, which still seems to have the ingredient for success that is sometimes missing in our modern day of government controls and reckless spending. |
