Show ARE YOU SPEAKING ENGLISH OR AMERICAN? If you've watched enough old Alec Guiness movies on TV, you no doubt are aware that the British have an odd command of the language, especially concerning con-cerning cars. We put our suitcases in the trunk, our transatlantic cousins put theirs in the boot. Other comparisons? Hood versus ver-sus bonnet; truck versus lorry. It gets stanger. A shock absorber is a damper. A station wagon is called an estate car, or if you prefer, a shooting brake. The British call a fender a wing. And if a Londoner offers you a ride in a saloon, he probably pro-bably means a sedan. If you're offered a ride in a Pub, that's something else. |
