Ute baseballers drop contests to Buffaloes The Uintah Utes dropped two games to the Buffaloes in Tooele, Friday, to finish with a record of 2 wins and 8 losses in Region 7 and an overall mark of 3 wins and 8 losses. The Utes suffered a close loss in the first game by the score of 5 to 3 and encountered a not so close setback in the second game, 22 to 9. Six of the nine starters for the first game did not play in the second game for the Utes. Tooele grabbed a 5 to 0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cluff was walked and M. Herrera got on base on an error by the Uintah shortstop. Tate and Goohis singled and Gorskreutz reached first base on an error by the Uintah centerfielder. Frailey gained a sacrifice hit and H. Herrera singled. Clugg, M. Herrera, Tate, Goohis and Groskreutz scored runs for the Buffaloes. Buf-faloes. Uintah's starting pitcher, Mike Reynolds, settled down as he shut out the Buffaloes in the rest of the game and only gave up two hits in six innings. ,The Utes caught on. fire in the run producing department in the sixth inning as they scored two runs. Mark Robb led off with a triple and was driven in on a double by Reynolds. Chad Stringham singled and Mike Leishman got on base on an error by the pitcher. Reynolds scored Uintah's second run. The Utes continued to blast the ball in the seventh inning as well. Randy Smuin blasted the ball for a single and Jeff Good reached first base on an error by the Tooele shortstop. Smuin was tagged out at third base and Rick Morton was walked. Robb slugged a single to load up the bases and Reynolds knocked in Good due to a sacrifice hit to cut Tooele's lead to 5 to 3. Stringham grounded out, with two men on, for the final out. Reynolds pitched seven innings and struck out five batters. The Uintah pitcher walked five batters and gave up five hits. Reynolds hit one batter. Uintah committed four errors in the game. Reynolds hurled no-hit ball in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. He allowed one hit each in the second inning, a single by Tate, and in the sixth inning, a double by Sorenson. Reynold and his fielders had a shaky start in the first inning as the pitcher allowed three singles, a sacrifice hit, a walk and the fielders committed two errors. Uintah smashed the baseball for nine hits and scored three runs. Smuin was 2 for 3 with two singles and Stringham. Robb were 2 for 4, Stringham had two singles and Robb had a triple and a single. Pat Jenkins was 1 for 2 with one single and Good, Reynolds were 1 for 3. Reynolds had a double. Good had a single. The Utes won the final 4'2 innings of the second game as they outscored Tooele, 9 to 6, but Tooele won the ball game with a 16 run eruption in the top of the first inning, which enabled them to win by the score of 22 to 9. Sorenson, Tate, Gochis, Graskreutz, Frailey, Griffith and Manchester scored two runs each for the Buffaloes in the first inning as Tooele used most of its first game varsity starters. Tooele, had six hits in the first inning and Uintah committed eight errors. Tooele had four singles and two doubles in the first inning. Uintah scored two runs in the first and third inning and exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. Tooele also scored runs in the second and fourth innings. Uintah had three walks, two singles and a double in the fifth inning. Brian McNamara smashed the baseball for a double. Audie Williams and Mike Workman had singles in Uintah's best inning in the game. Jeff Good and Rick Morton had doubles in the first inning and both scored runs. Robb had a double in the third inning and Uintah scored two runs. Uintah had nine hits in the game. |
