Teams i from Utah and Colorado took part in the track and field events. Vernal Panthers collect second place meetf honor Roosevelt Junior High toppled Vernal for the 8th grade title in the Basin Day Track Meet by the score of 80 to 51, Friday and Craig nipped Roosevelt, 70 to 68, for the 7th grade title. Vernal nabbed third place in the 7th grade division with 58 points and Duchesne placed fourth at 8 points. West netted fifth place at 7 points and Altamont captured sixth place with one point. Craig nabbed third place in the 8th grade division at 47 points and Duchesne placed fourth at 37 counters. Tabiona nabbed fifth place at 13 points Vernal captured three first places in the 8th grade division. Tony Lewis placed first in the 440 yard dash at 60.0 and nabbed top honors in the mile run at 5:47.58. Robert Merrell captured first place in the 220 yard dash for Vernal at 27.09 and missed a shot at first place in the 100 yard dash and hurdles when he missed the finals. Roosevelt collected six first places. Scott Jennings, nabbed crowns in the shot put at 37'3' z" and in the discus at 123'7". Richie Hadlock captured first place in the 100 yard dash at 12.19 and Wymer bagged first place in the 120 yard low hurdles at 17.69. Roosevelt's 440 yard relay team placed first at 52.61. Madsen earned first place in the triple jump with a leap of 32'92". Also nabbing first places were: Ercanbrack, Duchesne, 880, 2:24.92; high jump, 5'2" and long jump, 15'4"; Rose, Tabiona, pole vault, 9'0"; Duchesne medley relay, 1:59.03 and Craig, 880 relay, 1:55.25. Vernal's Lewis nabbed second place in the 880 at 2:28.89 and Steve Lent pocketed second place in the long jump at 14'11". Vernal's 440 yard relay team placed second at 53.22. Also placing in the meet for Vernal were: third places-Troy places-Troy Caldwell, mile, 5:49.04; David Gurr, shot put, 35'11"; Tren Horrocks, triple jump, 28'2"; fourth places-Ken Rasmussen, high jump, 410" and fifth places-Lent, 220, 28.99; Rasmussen, 440, 67.52; Mike Smith, 880, 2:31.59 and Curt Taylor, mile, 6:14.46. Vernal also placed third in the medley relay at 2:01.99 and 880 relay at 1:59.76.
