Show UTES BLAST NORTHWESTERN Freshman quarterback Kenny Vierra guided the University of Utah's potent offense to a 42-0 triumph over Northwestern Nor-thwestern Saturday. The loss was Northwestern's 23rd straight. Utah scored three times in the second and third quarters and was inside the Wildcat five yard line when the game ended. The victory was Utah's second straight over a Big Ten opponent (the last was a 13-9 win over Iowa in 1978) after four losses to Big Ten teams. It also was Utah's third victory against one loss this fall. Vierra started the game when quarterback Tyce Ferguson was injured in-jured against Portland State Sept. 19. Vierra, who was injured and only punted for Judge Memorial last season completed six of nine passes for 168 yards and one touchdown in the three quarters he played. Vierra also directed a powerful ground attack which scored five touchdowns touch-downs rushing. Uintah battled Judge Memorial in football contests in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Del Rodgers was Utah's big running star, carrying 20 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns, touch-downs, plus another on a pass. Robbie Richeson ran for 87 yards and scored one touchdown. Utah scored three times in the second and third quarters as Richeson darted 15, Rodgers plunged two yards, Vierra passed 36 yards to Rodgers, Rodgers darted in on a 56 yard run, Carl Monroe 1 scored on a 14 yard run and Rodgers scored on a six yard run. |
