Show ' if , BERTHA ELLIS Bertha Ellis honored at 75 A surprise 75th birthday dinner was held Sept. 19 for Bertha Ellis, a longtime resident of Vernal. In the summer of 1916, Bertha traveled by wagon with her parents, two brothers and three sisters from Else, Colo, to Diamondsville, Wyo., where they spent the winter. She worked at a cafe in Kemmerer, a mile away, which she walked. A year later they traveled by wagon train, this time accompanied by another family, and ended their trip in Vernal. She has had many interesting occupations. oc-cupations. Bertha worked in downtown Denver as a carrier for a stationery company. Since the early 1930's she worked as a waitress in Vernal, owning and operating the Vernal Cafe in the 40s. Bertha was the head waitress at the Hotel Vernal (now the Lamplighter) Lam-plighter) before she retired in 1970. Her sisters attended the dinner. They are Mrs. Leo 'Dolly) James, Grand Junction, Colo.; Mrs. Millard (Ilsie) Carmichle, Moab and Mrs. Edgar (Hazel) Mall, Grand Junction. Her brother Frank also attended from Grand Junction. Among other dinner guests were her daughter I)is Burton, two granddaughters, grand-daughters, Mrs. Steve (Sherry) Sawyer and Mrs. Todd (Darlenc) Norton; two great grandchildren, James and Scott and four step great grandchildren, Don, Lori, Kris and Shannon. |
