Show C Manila Clara Robinson Phone 784-3463 I Town meeting held in Manila An "Agendum for the 1980's" meeting was held at the Daggett County Courthouse on Wednesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. These meetings are called in communities all over the state by Governor Scott Matheson to discuss and seek solutions to problems facing all of us at the beginning of this new decade. Members for the Daggett Commission for the 80's are Dixie Grubb, Joyce Long and LaRay Sadlier with Mrs. Grubb being chairman. A film was shown to start the meeting which showed that one of the problems was the school population shift in Utah schools. This is causing a problem in appropriating funds. Topics discussed were human resources, public facilities, natural resources and taxation. There were 23 persons in attendance besides others who had conflicting meetings and only stayed a short time. Some people turned lists of problems to be entered. All problems and suggested solutions will be brought to the governor and his committee's attention to get public input on our problems. Several people reported that they thought it was a good meeting. Manila LDS Ward Bishop William M. Briggs announced new officers or reinstated ones for the auxiliaries in the ward who were all released when he was made bishop two weeks ago. Relief Society officers reinstated were Dolores Redden, president with counselors WaNeta Lamb and Juanita Ellsworth. New officers in primary are Joyce Long, president; AJeta Ellsworth and Ida Marie Twitchell, counselors. Sunday School president Glen Tinker and counselor Burl Twitchell. Connie Reed is secretary for the Sunday School. Rick Ellsworth is the new scout master. Ward music director is Barbara Bar-bara Briggs, Connie Reed is Relief Society chorister. Two drowning victims, Larry Johnson and Lucille Cramer were pulled from the Green River at approximately ap-proximately 4 p.m. on July 10. The two drowned when their raft turned over spilling the four occupants. Surviving the accident were Mary Johnson, wife of Larry Johnson and Mr. Cramer, husband of Lucille Cramer. Sheriff Gaylen Jarvie said neither of the victims was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. Two Boy Scouts were reported missing last weekend. After a day long search, the boys were found in the Birch Creek area. Daggett County, officers said the two boys were trying to ' hitch-hike to Salt Lake City. The highlight of the year for Manilites will be July 19-20. People usually attend this rodeo hoping to see all their old friends as well as enjoy the rodeo. Each day the rodeo events will start at 1 p.m. A dance will be held at the Manila High School gymnasium on Saturday night. Refreshments will be sold at the concessions at the rodeo. This annual event is sponsored by the Daggett County Lion's Club each year. Speakers from USU spoke at the senion citizen dinner held Wednesday, July 9 at the Senior Citizen Center, on adequate insurance to supplement medicare or if you don't have medicare, some other insurance so that the high cost of doctors and hospital care won't take your set income. It has been found that some people are paying on as many as four supplementary policies and none of them cover supplementary sup-plementary benefits needed. Others have no supplementary coverage. A chart showing how to check the benefits needed for a good supplementary policy when you are looking for a policy was shown. After the speakers left, time was turned over to bingo, pool and card games. There were 30 people in attendance. Mayor Chas. Willis brought a new Senior Citizen sign. "Old Timers" sign beautifullv rlone in colored glass is over uie door, but it does not attract people's attention and they cannot find the center if they are strangers to the area. Dr. Jim VanSlooten, chiropractor from Salt Lake City, called this week and said he would not be able to serve his patients at the Senior Citizen Center for a while. He will write to all of them. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Iverson spent last weekend with their son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Iverson and children in Cokeville, Wyo. Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs ' Norman Long this weekend was Wendi Cnnstiansen of Logan, Utah. Miss Christiansen was visiting the Long's son, Devan. Shari Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Levi Reed, Jr.. and Heidi Steinaker daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Steinaker, Jr., went to 4-H camp in Alpine, Wyo., last week. The new custodian has been doing a real cleaning job around the schools in Manila. This cleaning is usually done in the spring, but was not done this year. It surely looks much better. If it can just be kept this way it will be very nice to start school here. A new roof is being put on the high school. The roofing men started last week and are still working. 5nmP nf lumber had to be replaced before the roofing was done. Gwen Reed underwent back surgery at the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City on Wednesday of this week. It is reported that she is doing well. Many friends of Helen Behunin attended at-tended her funeral services Wednesday afternoon at McKinnon, Wyo. Mrs.. Behunin was killed on July 5 when coming home from the Ft. Bridger rodeo when their vehicle struck a Darker! truck that had no lights on it.' Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Schofield have announced the coming marriage of their daughter Stephanie Lynn to Mitch Lee Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy V. Hunt of Green River, Wyo., on Friday, July 18 at the Manila LDS church at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow the wedding. |
