Show Sherbet is as caloric as ice cream Which has fewer calories: ice cream, frozen custard, ice milk or sherbet? Sherbet and hard icef cream have about the same amount of calories, 258 per cup; ice milk 199 calories per cup; and soft frozen custard, 334 calories, says Kristy Mohr, extension specialist in nutrition and food sciences at Utah State University. Each of these desserts is a mixture of milk, stabilizers, sugars and flavorings combined in different amounts. Ice cream is made from cream, milk, sugar, flavorings and stabilizers and must contain at least 10 percent milkfat to be shipped interstate. Frozen custards contain more egg yolks than the other products and ice milk contains less milkfat than ice cream, between two and seven percent if shipped interstate. Sherbets contain about twice as much sugar as ice cream, but less milkfat, usually between one and two percent. The addition of fruit juices imparts the characteristic flavor. |
