Show Former Moabite Improving After Serious Mine Injury Former resident Larry Day is improving in the Carbon Hospital following a mine accident September 28 which pinned him under tons of rock for four hours two miles underground. He suffered a fractured pelvis, crushed right foot, and internal injuries, and it was termed miraculous that he came out of the mine cave-in alive. The roof of Swisher Coal Mine No. 2 collapsed without warning at about 3:45 p.m. Three miners in addition to Day were caught. Alan Dick, Carbonville, Leroy Forsgren, 19, Helper, and Aaron Soren-son, Soren-son, 21, Wellington were treated for cuts and bruises following their rescue from the mine. Larry's father, Lynn Day, Moab, said Tuesday that Larry had lost about a third of his right foot, and that it would probably require some skin grafts, but that eventually he was expected to be fine. He said hospital personnel expect Larry to be hospitalized for about six weeks longer. Personnel of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration Ad-ministration inspected the accident site. However, the cause of the accident was not yet determined. Day and the crew he was working with were pulling pillars of coal when the collapse occurred. The roof of the mine was bolted and timbered, according accord-ing to Swisher Coal Co. officials, and no unusual geologic problems were present pres-ent in the mine. |
