" - Cub bears should be with the sows this time of the year, but some are not. The Division of Wildlife Resources has had reports of at least 24 black bear cubs that have come down from their mountain ranges.. Rodney John, the big game supervisor for the Division, theorizes that due to the late frost (mid-June) and drought conditions this year a vegetative change has occurred occur-red resulting in a poor berry and acorn crop. The berry and acorn crop results in the winter fat supply of the bear. Due to the lack of food the instinct of self preservation has forced the sows to kick off the cubs to fend for themselves. Unlike prior belief, it is now thought that the cubs have a good chance for survival if left in the wild. |
