THROUGH THE FILES OF THE TIMES-INDEPENDENT AND THE GRAND VALLEY TIMES 40 Years Ago The agricultural class of Grand County High School, numbering about 20 boys, attended the Utah State Fair this week, accompanied by their instructor, H. B. Evans. A wrestling bout between Ira Dern of Salt Lake City and Tony Fuente of Mexico, was to highlight a big wrestling card planned for Moab this week. Joseph Burkholder of Moab, an old-time pioneer, observed his 92nd birthday with a small gathering of friends this week. Mr. Burkholder was a veteran of the Civil War. 60 Years Ago The Women's Club of Moab launched a movement to build sidewalks throughout Moab, and were soliciting funds for that purpose. Miss Pearl Watts and Loren L. Taylor were married this week by the Rev. R. W. Spencer. The Big Indian Copper company this week commenced commen-ced the erection of their mill. 20 Years Ago A new elementary school was under construction in the Walker addition which would relieve over-crowded conditions, condi-tions, but the high school space was still critical. Half-day Half-day sessions would be eliminated elimin-ated in elementary areas when the new school was completed. W. M. Bclangle, city building build-ing inspector recommended Moab adopt new gas ordinances ordinan-ces similar to those of Salt Lake City. "Standing Arch" down the Colorado river had been named by the Moab Chamber of Commerce under direction of Ed Provonsha. 10 Years Ago The Moab Red Devils were leading the league after an impressive win over East Carbon. At a special meeting of the Grand County School Board all bids were rejected for the second time on the high school track construction. Further steps to get the construction underway were being studied and would be considered by the Board as soon as possible. Grand County decided to bow out of the city-county master plan project beginning with the second phase, feeling that the information was readily available to the present board. The City had not yet decided whether to continue without County participation. |
