Show National Hunting, Fishing day set President Carter, in an official White House statement state-ment recently released, has praised the nation's hunters and fishermen for their historic histor-ic role in conservation and has recognized Saturday, September Septem-ber 24, as National Hunting and Fishing Day in tribute to the nation's sportsmen-conservationists. In issuing his statement, the President said, "The conservation con-servation movement, which now has widespread support throughout American society, was launched about 80 years ago, largely by the nation's hunters and fishermen. The efforts of these dedicated sportsmen have been crucial in promoting the American system of conservation and wildlife management-a system sys-tem now considered among the best in the world." The President, an occasional occasion-al quail hunter himself, used the occasion of the upcoming National Hunting and Fishing Day to commend sportsmen, . in saying, "Sportsmen cur-j cur-j rently provide most of the i funding for those state agen-i agen-i ties charged with the protec- tion of fish and wildlife. By the payment of license fees and special taxes, hunters and fishermen supply millions of dollars annually for the acquisition acqui-sition and improvement of fish and wildlife habitat." September 24 will mark the sixth annual observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day. According to the National Na-tional Shooting Sports Foundation, Foun-dation, some 3,000 separate programs and activities are expected to be held this year at sportsmen's clubs, schools, wildlife management areas, shopping centers, parks, etc. Some 20,000,000 participants arc expected. |
