Show V I I . -J' it rV- - i Round peg in a square hole... Trring to drive this loaded oil tanker across the Dewey Bridge early Saturday morning, Sept. 10, was not unlike trying to put a round peg into a square hole. It didn't want to fit. Driver Ernest E. Britt, Mesa, Co., got i bum steer in the early morning hours at a local restaurant telling him the river route would get him to Grand Junction faster. It lengthened the trip by some 10 to 12 hours. Britt arrived at the bridge about 4 a.m. and, seeing the difficulty of his situation, pulled onto the bridge to turn around. He hadn't driven a tanker truck and trailer rig before, and the trailer jackknifed into the guardrail fence approach to the bridge when he attempted to back out. Further jockeying resulted in a standoff, with the truck wedged against the south side of the bridge. See more photos on page B-l. |
