Limpert believes less is accomplished by substantially lowering the speed limit on these narrow highways, than could be done by taking steps to assure an uninterrupted flow of traffic at a reasonable speed. He says drivers become particularly impatient when a free-way ends and they are forced to drive for time in two-lane traffic before rejoining rejoin-ing an interstate system. "A good driver is characterized character-ized not by how many accidents acci-dents he has avoided but by how few chances he has had to take," says Limpert. According to Limpert, the key ingredients of driving safety are discipline, knowledge know-ledge of your vehicle and its operating capabilities and developing de-veloping an accident avoi-dence avoi-dence mentality. 'Drivers should discipline themselves to avoid taking chances and to remain alert," he says. The U research professor adds that motorists also should be aware of the operating operat-ing capabilities of their cars and how they react to different differ-ent weight loads and to sudden sud-den turns and stops. Drivers should constantly remain alert to potential crash situations, and accident avoidance avoi-dance manuevers should become be-come a part of their regular driving habits. |
