Show Education is Key Growth For Utah, Durham States "Utah's strategic oppor. tunity is to sell itself as a center oj the knowledge industry," Dr. G. Homer Durham, Utah Commissioner Commission-er of Higher Education, tokl those crowded into Utah Capitol Rotunda Monday Mon-day noon for the Statehood Day Diamond Anniversary celebration. "It's time for the com. Tnunity to make greater, conscious use of our manpower man-power resources," the Commissioner Com-missioner said. "If Utah is bypassed for Phoenix and Denver, we have only our selves to blame." Dr. Durham said that Utah has missed attracting attract-ing industry in the past because it hasn't been selling sell-ing that ccimmodity industry indus-try thrives on and Utah produces in both quality and quantity. "Local leaders have called call-ed attention to our natural natur-al resources mines, minerals, min-erals, coal, the chemicals tof the Greal! Salt Lake, powder snow, scenery during the first 75 years of statehood. During the next 75, the banks, the uti. lities, the airlines, the chambers of commerce, all the forces of economic development and industrial industri-al promotion, should un. ceasingly bring Utah's trained human resources to the attention of investment invest-ment capital." Utah has led the nation and the world in the average av-erage nu'mber of years of schooling completed by its population, the Commissioner Commis-sioner told the audience, citing statistics from the U. S. Statistical Abstract. It enrolls more people in '.college per capita and trains more of its citizens in vocational skills. "Meanwhile, "Mean-while, manufacturing growth grow-th in Arizona leads all 50 states., Utah's eltctronics students find jobs in Phoenix, Phoe-nix, Texas and Palo Alto." Dr. Durham said these other states have been successful suc-cessful in attracting industry indus-try because they have made their resources visible. visi-ble. "Why should scientific scientif-ic - electronic complexes crowd around Route 123 (Massachusetts, Palo Alto Al-to Los Angeles, then look for sites in Dallas or Phoenix Phoe-nix when they expand unless it is because the leadership of Texas and Arizona made such a 'big thing' of their new graduate grad-uate schools and their output out-put of scientists and engineers? Utah has had two schools of engineering for 80 years and three since 1950. "Phoenix "Pho-enix (Arizona State University) Uni-versity) graduated its first engineers in 1960. The Dean and President are ex-officio ex-officio members of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Com-merce by demand. Every Ev-ery industrial prospect that visits Phoenix is taken to see Arizona State University, Univer-sity, its engineering school, library, art galleries, fine art centers. Where is the School of Engineering lo. cated at Brigham Young University? The University of Utah? Utah State University? Uni-versity? How many know?" |
