Show Spotlight on Sporls By Don Robinson Did you notice:' All four of thc semi-finalists for the pro football playoffs had a starter from Utah State University or Utali State. We're coming up in the world. Utah could point to Roy Jefferson of the Colts and Charlie Smith of the Raiders. Dallas all-pro, Cornell C-rcen, and offense line captain, Len Rhode of the San Francisco 49er's are former Aggies. Take it a little further and you will find that all eight teams in the playoffs have Utes and Aggies starting, start-ing, not to mention Virgil Carter of BYU and now the Bengals. Test your memory and see if you can name the other four teams and their Utah players. NOW! What I would like is to sec some Moab names on the rosters of the Utah major colleges. The last major college player we produced was Mike Bynum ignored in Utah and a defensive standout with Colorado. The last to make it on a Utah team was Monk Bailey at Utah. While still on football don't forget, they will be playing for the rest of the month a couple of offensive offen-sive stars for Moab and San Juan have switched sides. Monty Lee, strong-armed quarterback from San Juan and Moab's prolific scorer Steve Robinson are figured as defensive backs at Snow College. Before you look clown your nose at prospects for a ski area on the LaSal Mountains, talk to some of the people who visited Purgatory near Durango and Powder-horn Powder-horn near Grand Junction this past week. They tell me. of buses and caravans from Illinois and Louisiana and just about every other state. If people will travel that far to ski, they will travel another hundred miles to Moab. Moab is no Durango of course, but we do have a unique geological and climate situation that would be an attraction. With the innovation of the super bowl, the pros gave up a sure-fire dud they used to call the runner-up bowl. If that bomb that matched up losers could draw money, 1 have a suggestion. Send the hapless Boston Patriots against equally weak Philadelphia in a playoff. They could call it the SUPER-BORE. |
