Show Moss Pleased at Committee Action On Railroad Assistance Bill WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Sen-ator Frank E Moss, D-Utah, rnnouneed today the Senate Commerce Committee, o f which he is a member, has reported the Railroad Passenger Pass-enger Service Bill to the full Senate. Senator Moss1 rvoted that many provisions of the bill reported today were contained contain-ed in the Moss-Moss Resolution Resolu-tion he and Congressman John Moss, D-Calif., introduced last year. "The bill calls for the Secretary Sec-retary of Transportation to designate the routes of a national na-tional railroad network where the public interests demands train service continue," Senator Sen-ator Moss said. "The bill then calls for a Federal subsidy to the railroads rail-roads who are required to cperale the systems designated designat-ed as necessary to the national nation-al interest. This is similar to the subsidy bill now paid to airlines. "A third provision of the bill calls for a conWnlumg study of the transportation needs of the country to be conducted by the Transportation Transpor-tation Department. "The bill also provides for car-pooling arrangements between be-tween railroads as a means of providing improved facilities facil-ities on the nation's passenger trains. "The bill received long study not only from the full Senate Commerce Committee, but also ifrom the Surface Transportation Subcommittee, of which I am also a member. mem-ber. "The bill is necessary if we are to maintain passenger railroad service in this country. coun-try. Numerous .studies and hearings have indicated that the trains are necessary, but they do cause a financial drain ore the railroads in many cases. "The subsidy seems a fair way to provide the service the public needs and demands while at the same time recognizing rec-ognizing tlte financial real ities which the railroads must take into consideration. "Western states, such as Utah, are especially dependent depen-dent upon good passenger train service, and this bill will help many of our citizens, not only in the larger cities, but also in the rural areas of the state." Senator Moss said. |
